Among them, there is a new material enterprise called Shenzhen Baishida Zhuoyue Technology Co., Ltd., which started as an agent and later achieved more than 70 patent layouts through independent research and development, and became a mainstream supplier to well-known companies such as Amazon, PetroChina, and Huawei.
Chairman Wei Dongjiang is in his early forties. In his opinion, the development of Baishida has undergone several strategic transformations, and 2019 will also be a crucial year for Baishida, and all of this is in line with the trend.

Agents embark on the path of research and development to solve global problems
Baishida was founded in 2005, mainly serving as an agent for materials of Buffett's wholly-owned subsidiary in the United States. Until 2012, it was the largest agent in China for the largest lubricant supplier in the United States. It is also one of the earliest companies to introduce TPU elastomer materials into China.
In addition, Baishida has also been a long-term agent for various types of flexible oil tanks, oil and water pipelines, and other military materials, and has participated in the development of multiple materials during the same period. And it was this unintentional move that became the beginning of Baishida's roots in the oil storage and transportation industry.

Ten years ago, Wei Dongjin learned at an industry exchange meeting that gasoline needs to be loaded and unloaded at least six times throughout the entire process from the refinery to the car fuel tank. As the oil in the tank truck usually only occupies 85% of the space, the excess 15% of the space can easily form difficult to recover oil and gas, ultimately resulting in a 1% loss of oil and gas during the loading and unloading process.
This is a global challenge that the global oil storage and transportation industry is currently facing.

In 2008, China's gasoline consumption was about 80 million tons, which means 800000 tons of oil and gas evaporated into the air, equivalent to the production of a small oil field. "This data shocked Wei Dongjin.
Due to years of working in the petroleum and materials industries, the Baishida team has discovered that some improved products have ultra-high performance such as blocking oil and gas evaporation, permanent electrostatic conductivity, and oil resistance.

Baishida has taken steps towards the goal of "no oil and gas volatilization" by using a multifunctional film made of high barrier materials for oil and gas evaporation and permanent electrostatic conductivity to create an inner lining bag device inside an oil tank. By setting up the inner lining bag surface to always adhere to the oil level, there is no space for oil products to produce oil and gas, and therefore no problem of oil and gas evaporation.
Through continuous testing by the Sichuan Environmental Monitoring Department over a period of 5 years, this improved technology has been recognized: the national emission standard is 25 grams/m ³ per day, but after using oil-free volatilization technology, the amount of oil and gas volatilization is only 0.073 grams/m ³ per day, which has been proven to reduce 99.97% of oil and gas emissions, almost reaching zero volatilization.
In 2012, the oil-free gas volatilization technology was approved as a research project by PetroChina and received a research and development funding of 1.81 million yuan.

The use of oil-free volatile soft oil bag technology can save a small oil field within a year. This success has ignited Wei Dongjin's interest in independent research and development, and has also raised more expectations from customers for Baishida.
It is precisely the successful development of this composite membrane technology that laid the foundation for the research and development of a series of technologically advanced products in the petroleum storage and transportation industry chain by Baishida.

Breaking through the bottleneck technology and becoming an industry standard setter
According to statistics released by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), between 1989 and 1990, 90000 out of approximately 2 million underground gasoline storage tanks in the United States experienced leaks. However, gasoline and diesel, due to their high solubility and strong volatility, will quickly spread and easily contaminate soil and groundwater once leaked.
Wei Dongjin said, "Currently, there are about 100000 gas stations and 500000 oil tanks in China, 99% of which are single-layer tanks. The service life of single-layer tanks is only 15-20 years, and China's large-scale construction of gas stations began in the mid-1980s. This means that there will be widespread corrosion and leakage of oil tanks in China, polluting groundwater

In February 2015, the central government approved the "Action Plan for Water Pollution Prevention and Control", which clearly stated that "all underground oil tanks at gas stations should be upgraded to double-layer tanks or anti-seepage tanks should be completed by the end of 2017".
At this point, China began to examine the issue of water pollution from top to bottom: one-third of China's water resources are groundwater, currently 90% have received varying degrees of pollution, 60% are severely polluted, and only 3% are clean.
This shocking set of data has accelerated the push for policy implementation.

In 2017, seven ministries including the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development jointly issued a notice on accelerating the anti-seepage renovation of underground oil tanks at gas stations. The policy mandates that all gas stations must be converted to double-layer tanks, and those that have been in use for more than 15 years are given priority for replacement or renovation.
The oil storage and transportation industry has witnessed a once-in-a-century trillion dollar blue ocean market. But opportunities are always reserved for those who are prepared.
Prior to the "Water Ten Measures" in 2015, Baishida had already started researching the "non excavation lining renovation" technology for underground oil tanks. To add a pressure resistant and durable lining inside the oil tank, fiberglass composite materials are the choice of most countries.
But a key material that affects the performance of fiberglass composite materials is high-end epoxy resin. Compared to the national strategic emerging material carbon fiber, China's high-end epoxy resin industry lags behind the international situation more seriously.
Therefore, high-end epoxy resin was once referred to by the media as one of the 35 "bottleneck" technologies.

Foreign countries restrict the export of high-end epoxy resin, and the imported downstream fiberglass prepreg is not only expensive, but also needs to be stored at low temperatures. If not careful, the entire batch of materials may be scrapped due to self curing. Wei Dongjin has a clear understanding of this difficult problem, but it is a ticket for Baishida to enter the trillion dollar blue ocean.
After years of effort, the Baishida team finally formulated a new type of epoxy resin and prepared a fiberglass prepreg with independent intellectual property rights through special design on fiberglass weaving. They were the first to apply this technology to the "non excavation lining transformation" of oil tanks.

Compared to the traditional excavation and replacement technology that takes only two to three months to start, the "non excavation lining transformation" technology only takes 5-7 days to transform a gas station's oil storage tank, greatly improving efficiency.
Due to years of accumulation in the oil storage and transportation industry, Baishida naturally led the drafting of the first domestic standard for the renovation of oil tank liners at gas stations - the "Technical Specification for Rigid Flexible Composite Lining Engineering of Buried Storage Tanks".
What's even more rare is that in 2018, Baishida became the core drafting unit of the national lining standard "Technical Standard for Anti leakage Renovation of Oil Tanks in Service at Gas Stations"; On February 13, 2019, the national lining standard co authored by Baishida was released and will be officially implemented on October 1.

All bidding, construction, and acceptance of the lining renovation of PetroChina gas stations must be carried out in accordance with the manual. Among the six shortlisted units in the manual, three use Baishida technology and materials. Baishida hopes to promote material development through testing services

According to Wei Dongjin, Baishida is actively trying to create a "fully ecological 'oil storage and transportation' system that provides complete solutions through testing and promotes the comprehensive development of new materials
Wei Dong Jingang, born in 1978, is in his forties and gives the first impression of being down-to-earth and steady. But after some communication, one can quickly feel his sincerity and enthusiasm for learning.
It is reported that from 2013 to 2018, Wei Dongjin persisted in short-term studies at world-renowned universities, including Princeton University, Stanford (twice), Columbia, Berkeley (California), Southern California, Cambridge University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Yale University, Wharton School, and other renowned universities.
Wei Dongjin admitted that he is a person who enjoys learning, especially after expanding into overseas markets, he needs to strengthen his understanding of international culture, and the knowledge he has learned can indeed help him strategically layout his company.
For example, the 'barrel theory' used to be a way for most people to make up for their weaknesses, but now the 'long board theory' is popular abroad. Everyone should try their best to do what they are good at and maximize their long board advantages
Based on this concept, Wei Dongjin made the decision in early 2019 to withdraw from engineering contracting and focus on providing new materials. The effect of focus is immediate. In 2018, Baishida only completed the lining renovation of 22 gas stations, and in the first half of 2019, it had already completed the lining renovation of 78 gas stations.
Of course, there was indeed a business logic consideration of "Intel doing motherboards and promoting chips" when choosing to contract projects back then. However, at the right time, material companies should focus on their strengths, actively make friends with upstream and downstream of the industry chain, and let the industry drive the development of new materials.
How many strategic transformations has Baishida undergone in its development, relying on opportunities? Wei Dongjin believed that everything was going with the flow.
